Story
A small cottage with white walls and a roof of red and yellow sits within a stretch of green field, set beneath a sky tinted purple, while industrial forms rise faintly in the distance behind it. This scene appears in Iona Croft, painted in 1925 in oil on canvas-board, now held by the National Galleries of Scotland. The artist, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883–1937), was Scottish and worked within the Scottish Colourists movement, also associated with Post-impressionism. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the humble, warmly colored roof of the croft and the cool, unusual purple tone washing across the sky above it, a pairing that gives the rural building an unexpected sense of drama against the quiet green land surrounding it.
