Story

A single sailboat with a white sail glides across blue-green water, set beneath a bright blue sky scattered with white and gray clouds. The composition balances sea and air, giving the vessel plenty of room to move. Frank V. Dudley painted this scene in oil on canvas in 1935. An American painter known for landscape work, Dudley lived from 1868 to 1957. The piece came to the Indiana State Museum through the Governor's Contingency Fund.

Where it works

A cool-toned landscape suited to living rooms and bedrooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
