Story

Broad black marks cut across a pale ground, their angled shapes forming a horizontal arrangement that balances open white space against heavy dark strokes. The composition reads as a tense interplay of structure and gesture, built from a few decisive forms rather than fine detail. Painted in oil in 1960, the work comes from Franz Kline (1910–1962), an American painter associated with abstract expressionism and action painting.

Where it works

Suited to dens and media rooms, and to boardrooms, in a horizontal format.
