Story
Thick black strokes cut across the canvas like scaffolding, interrupted by patches of orange, red, yellow, green, and white that peek through the gaps. The marks seem swung rather than drawn, giving the surface a sense of raw physical energy. This piece, titled Orange and Black Wall, was painted in 1959 using oil, and it is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Franz Kline (1910–1962), an American artist, worked within abstract expressionism and action painting, approaches tied to gesture and spontaneous mark-making. One detail worth noticing is how the orange tones sit nestled between the heaviest black bands, almost glowing against the darker structure around them, while small flecks of white and green add quieter accents to the composition's otherwise forceful rhythm. The contrast between stark black and warm color gives the whole image a charged, unsettled quality.
