Story
Heavy black strokes sweep across a white ground, interrupted by touches of ochre and olive green, giving the canvas a raw, gestural energy. Franz Kline made this oil on paperboard mounted on canvas in 1955. An American painter associated with abstract expressionism and action painting, Kline worked with bold, sweeping marks rather than finished detail. The piece entered the North Carolina Museum of Art as a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Samuel J. Levin.
Where it works
Warm-toned artwork suited to dens and media rooms, and to boardrooms, in a vertical format.
