Story
Thick, sweeping strokes cross a dark purple ground, with red, blue, white, yellow, and green pushing against each other in bold streaks. The marks feel urgent and physical, as if laid down in quick, forceful gestures rather than carefully planned forms. This oil painting, titled Red Brass, was made in 1955 by Franz Kline (1910–1962), an American painter associated with abstract expressionism and action painting. It belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
