Story
Bold black strokes cross a pale, cream-toned surface, their angular paths suggesting a loose geometric structure rather than any recognizable scene. Franz Kline made this ink study in 1957, working with quick, decisive marks that build tension between dark line and open ground. Kline (1910–1962), an American artist, worked within abstract expressionism and action painting, favoring gesture over depiction. The piece came to the Yale University Art Gallery as an anonymous gift.
Where it works
