Story
Broad slashing strokes of black and white cut across a ground of deep blue and yellow, built up with raw, gestural energy that pushes the composition into motion. The piece is an oil work completed in 1955. It reflects Franz Kline's place within abstract expressionism and action painting, approaches that favored spontaneous, physical mark-making over careful rendering. The painting entered the Yale University Art Gallery as a gift from Cornelius C. Vermeule III.
Where it works
Cool-toned artwork suited to dens and living rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
