Story
Bold black strokes sweep across pale paper, their angled intersections suggesting beams or girders from some unnamed structure. The marks feel decisive, built from quick gestures rather than careful outline, giving the composition a raw architectural weight despite its abstraction. Franz Kline made this ink work in 1951, working within American abstract expressionism and action painting. It entered Yale University Art Gallery through a collection tied to the class of 1935.
Where it works
Warm-toned artwork suited to dens and living rooms, and to boardrooms, in a vertical format.
