Story
A bold black silhouette spreads across a pale cream sheet, its edges built from quick, sweeping strokes that suggest geometric shapes caught in motion. The forms seem to lean and pull against each other, giving the composition a restless, charged energy. This piece, titled Untitled, was made in 1950 by Franz Kline using brush and black ink on wove paper, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art, having come to the museum as a gift from Elisabeth R. Zogbaum. Kline, an American artist (1910–1962), worked within abstract expressionism and action painting, approaches defined by direct, physical gesture. Looking closely, the brushwork reveals varying pressure and speed, with some strokes thick and saturated while others thin to a dry, scratchy edge against the open paper.
