Story
Bold black marks sweep across a cream-colored ground, mixing sharp angles with sweeping curves to form a composition that feels charged with motion. The piece carries no title, dating to 1955, and was made with oil and paper collage on wove paper mounted to paperboard. It is held at the National Gallery of Art, having come to the museum as a gift from Edward R. Broida. The artist, Franz Kline (1910–1962), an American painter, worked within abstract expressionism and the related approach of action painting. Looking closely, the brushstrokes vary in weight and speed, some thick and deliberate, others thin and quick, giving the surface a restless, unsettled energy that pulls the eye from one gesture to the next across the pale field.
