Story
A pale cream ground holds a cluster of forceful marks in black, magenta, and green, their edges rough and their rhythm uneven, as though laid down in a few swift passes. Streaks cross and overlap, some thick and blunt, others thinner and more jagged, giving the surface a restless, unsettled energy. This untitled sheet was made in 1950 using brush and colored ink on wove paper, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art, where it came to the collection as a gift from Elisabeth Ross Zogbaum. It was created by Franz Kline (1910–1962), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism and action painting. Worth noticing is how the magenta and green push against the black, keeping the composition from settling into any single direction or shape.
