Story

Sweeping black brushstrokes cross a cream-colored surface, their rough edges built up with force. Touches of purple, orange, and pink appear scattered through the composition, breaking the stark contrast of dark and light. The piece is untitled, held at the National Gallery of Art, made by Franz Kline (1910–1962), an American painter associated with abstract expressionism and action painting, movements built on gestural, immediate mark-making.

Where it works

Suited to living rooms and media rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
