Story

Broad black strokes sweep across a cream and tan ground, their edges rough and uneven against patches of weathered, stained surface. The composition relies on gesture rather than recognizable form, with the marks appearing swift and forceful. This untitled piece belongs to Franz Kline (1910–1962), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism and action painting, whose work is held at the National Gallery of Art.

Where it works

Warm-toned artwork suited to dens and living rooms, and to hotel lobbies, in a vertical format.
