Story

Bold black strokes cross a pale paper ground, their angular paths overlapping into dense, intersecting shapes that suggest sudden motion. The composition is rendered in brush and black ink on wove paper, held at the National Gallery of Art. It is the work of Franz Kline (1910–1962), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism and action painting, whose gestural approach favored directness over careful description, letting the ink itself carry the energy of the image.

Where it works

Warm-toned artwork suited to dens and media rooms, and to boardrooms, in a vertical format.
