Story
Thick black strokes cut across a worn cream and gray surface, with touches of rust breaking through the pale ground. The marks sit heavy and angular, pressing against the paper's uneven texture. This study, made with mixed media on paper in 1950, served as preparation for the larger Wotan composition. Franz Kline (1910–1962) worked within abstract expressionism and action painting, an American artist whose gestures carried the weight of raw, immediate motion.
