Story
Three horses lie together in a cluster, their bodies rendered through heavy black outlines filled with shades of blue, teal, and white. The forms curve into one another, giving the group a quiet, folded-in unity, while the cool palette sets a muted, nocturnal mood across the scene. This woodcut in colors, printed on Japan paper, was made in 1911 and is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Franz Marc (1880–1916), a German artist associated with Expressionism, also created the notable work Blue Horse I. One detail worth noticing is how the black contour lines separate and define each animal even as their shapes overlap and merge into a single mass of color.
