Story
Animals seem to dissolve into one another in this scene, their bodies folded tightly among leaves, vines, and curling natural shapes until the whole surface reads as one pulsing organism rather than separate creatures. The image is a woodcut made in 1912 by Franz Marc, a German artist associated with Expressionism, whose life ran from 1880 to 1916. His sense of animal form also appears in works such as Blue Horse I and Fox.
Where it works
