Two Horses

Story

Two animals stand close together, their bodies painted in grays and browns that stand out against a blue, multicolored backdrop rendered in abstract patches. The forms are simplified and rounded rather than detailed. The piece dates to 1908 and belongs to the Lenbachhaus collection. Franz Marc, born in 1880 and died in 1916, worked within Expressionism, and he held German citizenship as well as citizenship of the Kingdom of Bavaria. He is also known for Blue Horse I.

Where it works

A cool-toned abstract suited to dens and bedrooms, and to restaurants, in a horizontal format.
