Story
A seated woman wears a striped pink dress and rests on a rocky perch above a sun-washed hillside town, with slender cypress trees and a church tower visible in the distance, and broad-leaved trees framing the view. The scene depicts Castelnau-le-Lez, and the composition reads as a portrait of the sitter against this landscape. Frederic Bazille painted it in 1864 in oil on canvas, and it is held today at the Musée d'Orsay. The museum received the picture as a bequest from the artist's brother. Bazille, who lived from 1841 to 1870, worked within the Impressionist movement and is also known for his painting Bazille's Studio. One detail worth noticing is the striped pattern of the dress, which stands out sharply against the warm, open landscape surrounding the quietly posed figure.
