The Little Gardner

Story

A man dressed in pale clothing and a hat stands amid a garden full of pink flowering shrubs, with green trees rising behind him and a blue sky scattered with white clouds overhead. The scene appears calm, framed entirely by the surrounding plants and open air. This oil painting, titled The Little Gardner, was completed in 1866 and is held today at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Frederic Bazille (1841–1870) painted it, and he is associated with Impressionism. Looking closely, the contrast between the soft pink blossoms and the deeper green foliage draws attention to the single standing figure, who seems almost paused within the layered growth of the garden around him, as if caught between the shrubs and the wide stretch of sky above.
