Story

A weathered stone archway opens onto a hazy view of a distant tower rising against layered mountains, the whole scene washed in earthy browns and soft pale yellows. The composition is rendered in oil and paper on canvas, created around 1898-1900 by Frederic Edwin Church, an American painter associated with the Hudson River school. The piece entered its museum collection as a gift from the estate of Mrs. Charles Dudley Warner.
