Story
A river winds toward a mosque and a cluster of buildings in the far distance, the whole scene framed by tall trees that rise on either side of the foreground, where small figures move near boats along the water's edge. The composition balances the quiet grandeur of the architecture against the shadowed, leafy enclosure of the trees, giving the sense of looking out from a shaded vantage point toward a sunlit, far-off world. This oil painting, titled Al Ayn (The Fountain), was created in 1882 and is held at the Mead Art Museum. Its painter, Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), was associated with the Hudson River school. One detail worth noticing is how the boats and figures near the bank appear small and still, emphasizing the breadth of the river and the distance to the mosque beyond.
