Story
A dark mountainous landscape stretches beneath glowing streaks of green and red light, with a small boat resting on frozen ground far below. This oil painting, titled Aurora Borealis, was created in 1865 by Frederic Edwin Church and is held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Church, an American painter associated with the Hudson River school, also produced the notable work Catskill Sunset. One detail worth noticing is the tiny boat set against the vast icy terrain, dwarfed by the colored lights spreading across the night sky above the peaks. The contrast between the small human presence and the immense natural display gives the scene its sense of scale, drawing attention to how the frozen landscape and the luminous sky dominate the composition together in quiet, dramatic balance.
