Story

Rocky cliffs rise above a churning sea as waves break against the shore, while a golden sun climbs through hazy coastal air, its warm light meeting cool blue shadows along the misty terrain. This oil painting, titled Coast Scene, Mount Desert Sunrise off the Maine Coast, was made by Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school. The work came to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art through a bequest.
