Story

A towering, snow-covered volcano rises above a broad green valley, with scattered buildings and lush vegetation spread across the lower ground. The peak commands the center of the composition, its white summit contrasting against the softer tones of the land beneath. This oil painting, titled Cotopaxi, was created in 1855 and is held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school, also produced the work Catskill Sunset. Worth noting is how the mountain's icy cap seems to anchor the entire scene, drawing the eye upward from the cultivated valley floor to the vast, pale sky surrounding the summit, emphasizing the sheer scale of the landscape below it and the quiet stillness of the terrain surrounding the distant structures and trees.
