Story
A lone figure stands on a rocky shoreline as the sun sinks low, casting warm light across steep cliffs and jagged outcrops that rise along the still water of the bay. The scene captures the meeting point of land and sea, with the island's rugged edges reflected in the calm surface below. This depiction of Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy was painted in 1852 by Frederic Edwin Church in oil, and it is held at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, having entered the collection through a gallery fund purchase. Church, who lived from 1826 to 1900 and worked within the Hudson River school tradition, painted landscapes across the United States and elsewhere. Notice how the small human presence on the beach emphasizes the scale of the surrounding cliffs and the quiet vastness of the water stretching toward them.
