Mountains of Ecuador, 1855

Story

Snow-crowned peaks rise over a lush valley where a river winds past thick vegetation and a small settlement in the distance, rendered in rich, sunlit colors. Frederic Edwin Church painted this scene in oil in 1855. He was an American painter associated with the Hudson River school. The piece entered the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art through a bequest from Clara Hinton Gould.
