Story

Water pours over a rocky ledge in sweeping arcs of white foam, with mist rising above the churning river and a rainbow arcing through the spray, all set against tones of blue, green, and earthy brown. The scene shows the falls viewed from the American side, where the land breaks into rough stone edges before the drop. The painting was made in 1867 in oil and is held today by the National Galleries of Scotland. It came into the collection through a painting presented by a donor in 1887. The artist, Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), worked within the Hudson River school tradition of landscape painting. One detail worth lingering on is the faint rainbow threading through the falling mist, catching light amid the turbulent water below.
