Story
A glowing sunset fills the upper half of this scene, its green and white clouds hanging over a darkened line of trees along a shoreline and still water, while bare branches reach up from the lower edge. The piece was made in 1861, combining oil paint with a lithograph printed on paper and mounted on cardboard. Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school, created it; it comes from the Daniel J. Terra Collection.
Where it works
