Passing Shower in the Tropics

Story

A lush tropical scene unfolds with a snow-topped volcano rising above a river gorge, palm trees crowding the lower ground, and a small settlement visible far off beneath a sky full of clouds. The painting was created in 1872 using oil, and it is held at the Princeton Art Museum. Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school, made this work. The clouds suggest a passing shower moving over the warm lowland even as the peak above stays capped in snow, giving the single view two climates at once.
