Story

A lone figure pauses on a rocky bank where churning rapids rush past, hemmed in by tall trees as heavy storm clouds build over the wooded terrain beyond. The scene is rendered in oil on canvas, completed in 1846. It is the work of Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school, whose landscape painting captured such dramatic natural settings.
