Story

A single tall tree rises beside a river, where a boat carries small figures across the water. Distant mountains fade into haze beneath a glowing golden sky. This oil painting dates from 1856, created by Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school. The piece came to the Fenimore Art Museum as a gift from a charitable trust.
