South American Landscape

Story

Snow-covered peaks rise above a river valley where a small cluster of buildings sits among palm trees, the whole scene rendered in warm earth tones under a clouded sky. The composition captures distant summits above a lower settlement, pairing cold heights with the warmth of the valley floor. Frederic Edwin Church, who lived 1826–1900, made this piece around 1853, working in oil and graphite on paperboard; it is held at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Church, an American painter associated with the Hudson River school, also created the work Catskill Sunset. One detail worth noticing is how the palm trees near the settlement contrast with the icy summits looming above, drawing the eye between two very different climates held together in a single view.
