Story
A wide valley opens below jagged, snow-covered peaks, with a solitary palm tree standing near a winding river while warm sunlight spreads across the scene. This oil painting, titled The Andes of Ecuador, was created in 1855 and now belongs to the Reynolds House Museum of American Art, having entered the collection through a purchase fund supported by several foundations. The painter, Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), an American artist associated with the Hudson River school, also produced the notable work Cathedral, Chillo, Ecuador. One detail worth noticing is how the golden light seems to pour down through the mountains, catching the river's surface and giving the whole valley a glowing, almost tropical warmth despite the icy summits above.
