Story
A hilltop temple rises above scattered ruins and broken columns, set beneath an open blue sky and rendered in golden and brown hues that suggest late sunlight. The composition captures the ancient structure with a quiet, monumental presence. This image was painted in 1871 by Frederic Edwin Church, an American artist associated with the Hudson River school, known also as a landscape painter.
