Story
Weathered stone columns rise from thick greenery, remnants of an ancient site set against distant peaks capped in snow. The ruins appear worn and scattered, half absorbed into the surrounding landscape, while the mountains loom pale and cool behind the warmer tones of the foliage. Frederic Edwin Church completed this piece in 1868, working in oil and pencil on board, and it is now held at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Church, who lived from 1826 to 1900, was an American painter associated with the Hudson River school. The composition draws attention to the contrast between the solid, upright columns and the softer, irregular shapes of the plants climbing around their bases, giving the ruins a sense of being gradually reclaimed by the land that surrounds them under the quiet, snow-covered range beyond.
