Story

Sailing ships rest in a harbor enclosed by rocky cliffs and trees, the whole scene glowing in golden and green tones that suggest a quiet, sunlit atmosphere. Water and stone meet under a soft wash of light, giving the harbor a calm, open feel. The piece is an oil on canvas completed in 1846 by Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school, now held at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.
