Story

A rocky ridge rises in the distance, framed by stretches of green woodland and a river that curves gently through the land. Overhead, clouds gather in a wide sky, while in the foreground a meadow holds small figures and a horse-drawn cart going about their day. This oil painting, titled West Rock, New Haven, was created in 1849 by Frederic Edwin Church and is held at the New Britain Museum of American Art, having entered the collection through the John Butler Talcott Fund. Church, who lived from 1826 to 1900, worked within the Hudson River school tradition of landscape painting. Worth noticing is how the winding river draws the eye from the quiet meadow back toward the looming mass of the ridge, linking human activity to the vastness of the natural setting beyond.
