The Bridge, Blackwell’s Island

Story

A long bridge crosses a stretch of dark blue water, with industrial structures and a hazy cityscape rising beyond it in tones of yellow, blue, and brown. The composition balances the hard geometry of the bridge against the softer, smudged forms of the buildings and sky, suggesting a working waterfront under shifting light. This oil painting, titled The Bridge, Blackwell's Island, was created in 1909 by George Bellows and is held today at the Toledo Museum of Art. Bellows painted scenes of urban life, capturing the energy of the city and its structures. Looking closely, the warm yellow glow along parts of the bridge contrasts sharply with the cool blue water below, drawing the eye across the entire span toward the distant buildings fading into haze.
