Story

A weathered dark house stands on a rocky shoreline, with broken timbers from a wrecked vessel scattered nearby and seagulls gliding over blue water beneath a clouded sky. The scene has a quiet, rugged feel, as if the land has absorbed the force of the sea over time. This piece was created in 1913 using oil on panel, and it is held at the Addison Gallery of American Art. George Bellows (1859–1891) painted it, and he is recognized for his contributions to American realism. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the stillness of the house and the restless movement of the birds skimming above the water, which gives the composition a subtle sense of tension between permanence and change.
