Story

Seen from Battery Place, the city unfolds as a bird's-eye map, its streets laid out in careful grid lines, waterways curling around the shore, and sailing vessels dotting the harbor in muted earth tones with blue-green accents. George Schlegel made this chromolithograph, held in the John H. Levine Collection.
