Brown and White Norfolk or Water Spaniel

Story

A spaniel with brown and white markings is seen sideways, positioned within a scene of willow trees, blooming flowers, and a sky filled with clouds. The animal's body faces one direction while its head turns slightly, giving a sense of quiet watchfulness. This piece was created in 1778 using oil on panel, and it is held at the Yale Center for British Art. George Stubbs, the artist responsible for the piece, is also known for his work Whistlejacket. Worth noticing is the contrast between the softness of the surrounding foliage and flowers and the crisp detail given to the dog's coat, which draws the eye immediately to the animal despite the richness of the landscape setting around it.
