Greenland Falcon

Story

A white and brown falcon stands perched on a wooden stand covered with leather, its gloved surface meant for a trained bird of prey. Behind it stretches a landscape of trees under a cloudy sky, giving the scene a quiet outdoor setting. The painting dates from 1780 and is rendered in oil on panel, now held at the Yale Center for British Art. The artist, George Stubbs, is known for his painting Greenland Falcon, which captures this same subject. Looking closely, the contrast between the falcon's pale and darker feathers stands out against the muted tones of the sky and trees, drawing attention to the texture of its plumage and the sturdy construction of the perch beneath its talons.
