Story
A sturdy brown horse stands quietly in an open landscape beside a young boy dressed in red, who holds a basket in his hands. Tall trees rise behind them, and a river stretches into the distance beyond the grass. The scene is calm, with the horse's stillness balanced by the boy's upright posture near its side. This piece was created in 1774 using oil on panel, and it is held today at the Yale Center for British Art. George Stubbs, the artist behind this work, was known for painting horses with careful attention to their anatomy and form. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the boy's bright red clothing and the muted browns and greens of the horse and surrounding landscape, which draws the eye immediately to his figure within the composition.
