Story

A horse races forward at a full gallop, carrying a jockey dressed in tan breeches, with a brick stable building standing behind them and a cloudy sky stretching overhead. The brown horse's legs are stretched wide in motion as the rider leans forward, intent on the course ahead. This print, titled 'Baronet', was created in 1794 as a hand colored stipple with etching in its second state, and it is held today at the Yale Center for British Art. It was made by George Townly Stubbs, after George Stubbs, whose original work provided the basis for this engraved image. Notice how the brick stable's solid, still presence contrasts sharply with the energetic, forward thrust of the galloping horse and its focused jockey, giving the composition a strong sense of speed against stillness.
