A Day in June

Story

A green lawn spreads before a classical building, crowded with numerous figures in white dresses gathered in the open air. The scene is painted mostly in white, green, and muted earth tones, giving the gathering a soft, airy feel. This is an oil painting titled A Day in June, created in 1913, now held at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The museum received the work through the Detroit Museum of Art Purchase, using the Lizzie Merrill Palmer Fund. The artist, George Wesley Bellows (1882–1925), was associated with the Ashcan School. The crowd of pale dresses against the lawn and the pale stone of the building creates a quiet rhythm across the canvas, with the architecture anchoring the loosely gathered figures in a sense of shared outdoor leisure.
