Cornfield and Harvest

Story

Cattle graze among tall rows of corn, with trees and rolling hills framing the pasture under a sky thick with blue and green clouds. The weather above seems unsettled, giving the quiet farmland a sense of tension. George Wesley Bellows painted this scene in oil on masonite in 1921. Bellows, an American artist (1882–1925), worked within American realism and the Ashcan School, movements concerned with direct observation of everyday life.

Where it works
