Story
A farmyard opens before the viewer, with mounded haystacks and a weathered barn standing near bare trees, while small figures move through the yard under a palette of warm yellows, deep browns, and shadowed dark tones. The scene settles into late autumn or winter stillness, the bare branches suggesting a season stripped of leaves. George Wesley Bellows painted this oil work in 1909, and it is held today at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Bellows, born in 1882 and died in 1925, worked within the Ashcan School, bringing an unvarnished eye to everyday American scenes. One detail worth noticing is how the dark tones gather around the barn's edges, giving the structure a solid, grounded weight against the lighter haystacks scattered across the yard.
