Story
A dense city street fills the canvas, packed with horse-drawn carts and pedestrians moving between tall buildings. The scene is rendered in browns, greens, and grays, giving the crowd and the architecture a shared, muted tone. This oil painting, titled New York, was made in 1911 by George Wesley Bellows and is held at the National Gallery of Art. Bellows, who lived from 1882 to 1925 and worked in the United States, is associated with the Ashcan School and American realism. Looking closely, the layered mass of carts and figures suggests the congestion of the street, with the tall buildings pressing in from either side to frame the activity below.
